Endodontics
(root canal therapy) is the treatment of teeth with diseased
pulp tissue. The inside of the tooth (the dental pulp) is
often referred to as the nerve of the tooth. We provide a
completely staffed Endodontic department specializing in root
canal therapy.
Common
reasons for Root Canals include:
- When trauma
causes the nerve to separate from the tooth.
- A cracked
tooth can cause the need for a root canal if the crack exposes a
nerve.
- A chipped
tooth that exposes a nerve.
- Decay has
reached the nerve, which has caused an abscess or a cracked,
fractured or chipped tooth that exposes or damages a nerve.
What happens during a Root Canal
|
 |
The pulp
includes nerve tissue, blood vessels, connective tissue,
and tooth regenerative cells.
When the pulp is injured or
diseased, root canal therapy is necessary to provide pain
relief, and to allow the tooth to be saved. |
|
|
 |
When decay
reaches the tooth root, a "Root Canal" is necessary to save the
tooth. The tooth decay is removed.
Next, the pulp
(nerves and blood vessels) is removed and the chamber of the
tooth and the roots are rinsed. |
|
 |
Once the tooth
is clean and free of infection, the pulp chamber is filled with
a rubber like material and the tooth is then filled or crowned.
This will depend on the extent of the damage to the tooth
itself. |
